Job Description
North Dakota Health & Human Services Finance Division is seeking a Grants Accountant within the state of North Dakota.
This position may work remotely from anywhere in North Dakota. The first week will require in-person training in Bismarck, with travel to Bismarck approximately once a month for meetings thereafter.
Bring your accounting skills to a mission-driven role as a Grants Accountant. If you have a passion for accuracy, organization, and the details behind the numbers, we've got the right place for you. You will play a key role in ensuring funds are managed accurately, transparently, and in full compliance while supporting healthcare services that matter to North Dakotans.
As the Grants Accountant, you will be the subject-matter expert on all financial matters related to Medical Assistance grants. You will routinely review financial records, expenditures, and reports to confirm grant funds are accurately accounted for, compliant with federal and state requirements, and reported in a timely and transparent manner. When discrepancies are identified, you will develop and implement corrective action plans and advise leadership on compliance risks and implications. You will also support internal and external audits, prepare required financial reports, and contribute to continuous improvement of grant accounting processes.
To thrive in this position, you must be the kind of person who genuinely enjoys reconciling accounts, research variances, and ensuring funds are tracked and accounted for. You must have a strong understanding of accounting principles and have exceptional attention to detail. You must be a self-starter that challenges yourself and views learning new things as an opportunity to grow. In addition, you need the ability to analyze complex financial data and use sound judgement to resolve discrepancies. You need strong communication skills to allow you to effectively work with team members, auditors, vendors, and federal agency staff and also flexible time management skills to meet the federal reporting deadlines. Most importantly, you must be curious and persistent enough to want to find out the "why" when things don't balance.
To be considered for the Grants Accountant, you must have a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field and two (2) years of professional experience in grant or government accounting. This would include financial reporting, account reconciliation, budget and expenditure monitoring, grant compliance, and preparation of financial documentation for audits or regulatory reporting.
Location
This position is based in Bismarck, North Dakota. The candidate selected must reside in Bismarck, or surrounding communities, or be willing to relocate to the area.
