Research Cyberinfrastructure Engineer, UNLV Research [R0152643]
ROLE of the POSITION
The research cyberinfrastructure engineer has experience in research computing and a passion for empowering new users of advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI).
UNLV is an emerging R1, EPSCoR institution with a growing investment in expanding cyberinfrastructure. The position is part of a collaboration between UNLV IT and the Division of Research to leverage all opportunities in delivering cutting edge technology and supportive cyberinfrastructure services. As part of this growing team focused on delivering a wider range of solutions through collaboration with enterprise IT staff, faculty, students and regional and national research data and computing community, the research computing engineer is a collaborator who enjoys a key role in helping researchers employ advanced technology to improve research outcomes. The position helps to develop and maintain systems, storage, networking and data architecture to support data-intensive research, teaching, and workforce development. The role is designed for an individual who is looking to enjoy a more impactful role in collaborating with IT teams in implementing research technologies that include high performance computing, research networks, AI/ML technologies. Equally important is an inclusive and innovative outlook, towards lowering the barriers to using advanced computing.
Key Responsibilities:
Install, configure, and maintain HPC hardware and software, including clusters, storage systems, and networking components.
Monitor system performance and implement tuning and optimization strategies to maximize computational efficiency.
Provide technical support and guidance to researchers and students using HPC resources, including troubleshooting and resolving issues.
Implement and maintain security protocols and ensure compliance with university and regulatory standards.
Collaborate with researchers to understand their computational requirements and assist in the development of custom solutions.
Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for HPC systems and provide training sessions for users to enhance their understanding and utilization of HPC resources.
KNOWLEDGE
Required
Knowledge of a variety of HPC systems (CPU, GPU, storage systems, file systems, networking, virtualization, job schedulers (Slurm) and scientific applications) sufficient to understand, seek clarification on the recommendations of technical experts and assist researchers in translating recommendations
Knowledge of IT systems monitoring, telemetry methods, and basic analytics.
Understanding of at least one and familiarity with two or more additional technologies listed (data structures related to research, data management plans, data-facing scientific instruments, storage systems, data workflows, data staging and transfer systems, identity and access management, software utilized in research and cloud technologies)
Familiarity with facilitation techniques used to engage researchers from a variety of disciplines
Advanced knowledge of database, filesystem, networking, server, operating system, and software concepts directly applicable to team science, internet-of-things, cloud architecture, cluster computing, and user management.
Preferred
Knowledge of containerization technologies (Kubernetes, Singularity, etc.)
Knowledge of managing any of the following GPUs, MPI, InfiniBand, XDMod
Knowledge of AI/ML Packages
SKILLS
Required
Experience assisting researchers in translating research challenges into technical solutions
Triaging complex problems and defining solutions
Working collaboratively as part of a technical and non-technical team
Experience in software infrastructure deployment, management, and automation.
Training non-technical and technical users in the use of cyber infrastructure from a researcher perspective
Mentoring and\or advising students, postdoctoral researchers, or junior faculty in their academic and professional development
Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in research, teaching, or service
Proficiency in Linux OS and scripting skills (Python, BASH, etc.)
Experience working with Git repositories
Preferred
Experience with maintenance and implementation of Demonstrated leadership in the areas of computing, data, and cyberinfrastructure within an academic or research-intensive setting
Contribute to the broader academic and professional community by participating in conferences, workshops, and other events related to computing, data, and cyberinfrastructure
ABILITIES

Ability to effectively communicate to colleagues across disciplines and with different level of technical proficiency
Ability to learn and communicate the salient aspects of complex and novel technical concepts to peers in the University as well as scientific and engineering personnel
Learn and teach new technologies

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a Bachelor's from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and 3-5 years of experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
Experience working in a higher education or research-intensive setting
Demonstrated success in working with a research team supported federal and/or regional research grants
3-5 years of experience in systems administration, with specific experience in HPC environments.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
5+ years of experience in systems administration, with at least 3 years in an HPC environment.
Experience with parallel file systems (e.g., Lustre, GPFS).
Familiarity with cloud computing platforms and hybrid HPC environments.

Salary is $90,000-$100,000. Unable to offer more than stated salary.
