Job Description

The New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Special Education Assistant Substitute position at the New York State School for the Deaf. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for the classroom care of students in the school's education or residential programs. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide direct supervision to students;
• Assist Instructors in the delivery and practice of content;
• Supervise students in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch;
• Escort students from class to class; and
• Provide direct instruction under the supervision and guidance of the Instructor.

Minimum Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency diploma AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children AND obtain a New York State certification as a Teaching Assistant or be eligible to obtain such certificate within one (1) year of employment. *
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to candidates who have the following:
• Experience working with special needs students particularly deaf or hard of hearing;
• The ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language; and
• Experience working with adults as part of a team.
