Job Description:
This recruitment will be used to fill multiple part-time tutors (maximum of 10 hours per week) for the

OSU

Upward Bound Program at our six target schools in the following locations: Corvallis, Albany, Sweet Home, McMinnville, Hillsboro and Hood River.
Upward Bound Tutors work individually and with small groups of UB high school students to assist with their studies in Math (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus) Science (biology, chemistry, physics, and anatomy/physiology) and English/Writing over the course of the term (week 2 through week 10) to help them better understand course material and prepare for assignments and exams. We are looking for one tutor in each of the academic areas, but individuals who can work in two or more fields are preferred.
In addition to helping students with course content, tutors share study strategies and demonstrate methods for how students can find the answers for themselves, with the goal that through tutoring, UB students build the skills that will enable them to experience greater academic success and excel in their classes.
Position Duties
Provide individual and small-group tutoring to TRIO Upward Bound students in designated academic areas and during scheduled tutoring sessions.
Serve as an academic resource by assisting students with understanding course concepts, applying academic skills, completing assignments, and developing effective study and learning strategies.
Establish positive and supportive relationships with Upward Bound students and serve as a mentor and positive role model by encouraging academic achievement, personal growth, and preparation for postsecondary education.
Communicate with Upward Bound program staff regarding student participation, academic progress, challenges, and opportunities for additional support.
Assist with and/or chaperone Upward Bound educational activities, field trips, campus visits, and other program events as assigned.
Assist with quarterly study sessions, student orientations, parent/family orientations, and other program activities designed to support student engagement and academic success.
Perform other related duties as assigned in support of TRIO Upward Bound program goals and objectives.

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (
USCIS
). A reduced course load is approved by the

Office of International Services

OIS
), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Preferred
Federal Work-Study eligibility is preferred.
Previous experience tutoring, mentoring, coaching, teaching, or supporting high school or college students in an academic or educational setting, whether paid or unpaid.
Current or prior participation in, employment with, or involvement in TRIO programs (e.g., Upward Bound, Talent Search, Student Support Services), CAMP, EOP, LSAMP, or other college access and student support programs.
Demonstrated interest in supporting students' academic achievement, personal development, college readiness, and pursuit of postsecondary education.
Strong communication, interpersonal, organization, and teamwork skills, with the ability to establish positive and supportive relationships with students.
Working Conditions/Schedule:
Tutors will work primarily in school-based settings at one of OSU TRIO Upward Bound's six target schools in Corvallis, Albany, Sweet Home, McMinnville, Hillsboro, or Hood River.
Work schedules will vary by school site and student needs and will be coordinated with the Upward Bound Program.
