Safety Specialist, Administrative Services [R0152991]
ROLE of the POSITION
Reporting to the Occupational Safety Program Manager, the Safety Specialist plays a key role in advancing a culture of health and safety at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and Nevada State University. This position functions as both a proactive educator and a technical expert in occupational safety, responsible for identifying hazards, developing preventive strategies, and working with various stakeholders ensuring compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.
The Safety Specialist leads comprehensive and recurring inspections of campus buildings, shops, and various worksites to identify potential or existing safety and health hazards. These inspections include detailed documentation and close coordination with departments to ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
Beyond core inspection duties, the Safety Specialist provides essential support in several specialized and administrative areas to strengthen the effectiveness of the occupational safety program. This includes assisting with program development, contributing to training initiatives, and supporting safety-related projects. As a subject matter expert, the Safety Specialist also serves as a vital resource to the campus community --offering guidance, answering safety-related inquiries, and advising on best practices to maintain a safe working and learning environment.
With appropriate management approval, the Safety Specialist may identify and recommend necessary safety-related purchases and coordinate with vendors to ensure proper calibration and maintenance of occupational safety and health monitoring equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety or a related field from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). And 2 to 4 years of experience conducting safety inspections with a focus on hazard recognition and prevention, performing comprehensive risk assessments, and developing practical, effective solutions to mitigate safety and health risks across various workplaces. Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
ACCEPTED EQUIVALENCIES FOR DEGREE REQUIREMENT
UNLV may consider additional
relevant
experience in place of formal education requirements:
In lieu of a bachelor's degree, applicants may qualify with four additional years of relevant experience, or with an associate's degree plus two additional years of relevant experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
CHST or OHST certification
OSHA 10-hour General Industry or OSHA 10-hour Construction course completion card
Knowledge of OSHA and ANSI standards and how they would apply to university settings where there are numerous functional areas represented.
Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Nevada Revised Statues (NRS) and Nevada Administrative Code (NAC).
How to use specialty equipment such as gas meters, light meters, and noise dosimeters.
Awareness of university structure, departments, safety policies and procedures.
Awareness of ADA accessibility requirements.
Familiarity with the CHIMERA inspections platform and learning management system.

SALARY
Salary range is $68,000 to $72,000, or commensurate with the labor market.
