Overview
Utah State University Eastern Athletics is seeking qualified applicants for part-time/on-call Athletics Bus Driver positions. This position supports the transportation needs of USU Eastern athletic teams, coaches, staff, and approved passengers for practices, competitions, team travel, special events, and other athletics-related activities. This position may also support other approved university transportation needs or events as assigned and accepted.
This role operates on a variable, as-needed schedule based on athletic team travel needs, department needs, and driver availability. Trips may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, long-distance travel, extended days, and overnight stays. Successful candidates will be dependable, safety-minded, professional, and able to represent USU Eastern Athletics in a positive manner while transporting student-athletes, coaches, staff, and approved passengers.
This position will also assist USU Eastern Athletics with minibus operations, including vehicle readiness, cleanliness, basic maintenance reporting, mileage tracking, inspection documentation, and safe transportation practices.

Schedule and Assignment Expectations
This is a part-time, as-needed/on-call position. Hours will vary based on athletic team travel schedules, department needs, and driver availability. There is no guarantee of minimum hours, and drivers are not expected to accept every trip or assignment offered.
When a driver accepts an assignment, they are expected to honor that commitment, arrive prepared and on time, communicate professionally, complete the assignment as scheduled, and provide safe, reliable, and professional transportation for USU Eastern student-athletes, coaches, staff, and approved passengers.
Work is not expected to follow a traditional daily route schedule.
Reporting Structure
This position reports to the Director of Athletics or designee. Drivers will work closely with athletics administration, coaches, the Athletics Transportation and External Relations Coordinator, and other university staff to coordinate safe and efficient team travel.
Compensation
Compensation will be determined based on university guidelines, position requirements, qualifications, and available departmental funding. Travel-related expenses, lodging, meals, and other approved costs will be handled according to university travel policies.
Responsibilities
Team Transportation
Safely operate USU Eastern Athletics minibuses, buses, and/or other approved university vehicles for athletic team travel.
Transport student-athletes, coaches, staff, and approved passengers to and from athletic contests, practices, events, airports, hotels, meals, and other approved travel locations.
Drive local, regional, and long-distance trips as assigned and accepted.
Be available for travel that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, extended days, and overnight stays.
Maintain a professional, respectful, and positive environment for student-athletes and staff during travel.
Represent USU Eastern Athletics and Utah State University in a professional manner at all times.
Vehicle Safety and Operations
Complete required pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
Ensure vehicles are clean, fueled, and prepared for travel.
Report mechanical issues, maintenance concerns, safety hazards, damage, or needed repairs in a timely manner.
Follow all applicable federal, state, university, departmental, DOT, FMCSA, and transportation policies and procedures.
Operate vehicles in a safe, responsible, and legal manner at all times.
Monitor weather, road conditions, travel delays, and safety concerns in coordination with athletics administration and coaches.
Immediately report accidents, incidents, injuries, vehicle damage, or safety concerns according to university and departmental procedures.
Vehicle Readiness and Basic Operations Support
Assist with basic vehicle readiness, including fueling, checking fluids when appropriate, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring required safety items are present.
Help maintain accurate records related to mileage, fuel, inspections, maintenance concerns, and assigned trips.
Identify and report vehicle maintenance issues and basic equipment operation concerns.
Assist with cleaning vehicles after trips and helping keep vehicles ready for future use.
Support the department's overall minibus operations as USU Eastern Athletics manages vehicle use, scheduling, maintenance coordination, and driver staffing.
Communication and Professionalism
Communicate clearly and professionally with coaches, athletics staff, student-athletes, university personnel, and outside vendors when needed.
Follow assigned itineraries and communicate any delays, safety concerns, schedule changes, or travel issues as soon as possible.
Use required technology, including phone, email, scheduling systems, mileage logs, timekeeping systems, and other university platforms as assigned.
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries, confidentiality, and conduct when traveling with student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
Provide excellent customer service to teams, staff, and passengers.
Compliance and Safety
Follow all Utah State University, USU Eastern, Athletics Department, NJCAA, conference, DOT/FMCSA, and applicable transportation policies.
Maintain required licensure, endorsements, certifications, medical card, driver eligibility standards, and training requirements.
Remain current in all required university and CDL/bus driver trainings, certifications, and driver regulations.
Participate in required university trainings, driver trainings, safety trainings, drug and alcohol testing requirements, background checks, and motor vehicle record reviews.
Comply with all applicable drug and alcohol testing requirements, including pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, or follow-up testing when required by university policy, DOT/FMCSA regulations, or applicable law.
Support a safe, respectful, and positive travel environment for student-athletes and staff.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Current and valid Class A or Class B CDL with passenger endorsement.
No air brake restriction, unless otherwise approved based on vehicle type and university policy.
Current CDL Medical Card.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of two years of driving experience preferred.
Previous experience driving buses, minibuses, vans, shuttles, commercial vehicles, or athletic/team travel vehicles.
Experience transporting students, student-athletes, teams, or groups.
Experience with overnight, long-distance, or regional travel.
Knowledge of vehicle inspections, basic maintenance checks, mileage logs, and transportation safety procedures.
Minor maintenance experience or basic understanding of vehicle/equipment operations.
Familiarity with Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Arizona, Washington, and other regional travel routes commonly used for athletic competition.
Experience working in a school, college, athletics, transportation, motor pool, or public service setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to meet all university driver eligibility requirements.
Ability to successfully complete required State of Utah Defensive Driving training, university driver authorization, and other required driver trainings upon hire.
Ability to safely operate a minibus, bus, or other approved university vehicle.
Ability to work a flexible, as-needed schedule when assignments are accepted, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, extended days, and overnight travel.
Ability to accept or decline offered assignments based on availability, while honoring all accepted assignments.
Ability to communicate effectively with coaches, staff, student-athletes, supervisors, and passengers.
Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures, travel instructions, and university policies.
Ability to use basic technology, including a cell phone, email, timekeeping systems, mileage logs, basic spreadsheets, and travel-related communication tools.
Strong attention to safety, reliability, punctuality, professionalism, and customer service.
Interest in athletics and a desire to support student-athletes, coaches, and team travel in a positive and professional manner.
Job offer is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, motor vehicle record review, pre-employment drug test, and any other required employment or driver eligibility screening.

Physical Demands
This position may require sitting for extended periods while driving. The employee may occasionally be required to lift, carry, load, or move items related to team travel, such as luggage, equipment, coolers, or supplies. The employee must be able to enter and exit vehicles safely, perform vehicle walk-around inspections, and respond appropriately to travel or safety situations.
Work Environment
Work will primarily occur while operating university vehicles and traveling with athletic teams. This position may involve variable weather conditions, long travel days, early departures, late returns, overnight trips, weekend travel, and occasional schedule changes due to athletic contests, road conditions, weather, or team needs.
