Job Description
The purpose of this classification is to read, install, repair and/or test water meters.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This classification is distinguished from Meter Services Technician I in that incumbents in this class handle more complex repair and meter reading tasks and have two years of experience providing meter services.
Investigates and resolves customer complaints regarding water meters (sizes 3/4-inch to 10-inch), water leaks, pressure, and high bills: checks meters for water leakage, proper operation, and illegal water taps; pumps water from meter boxes; determines source of leaks; reports leaks to property owner and/or supervisor; repairs or rebuilds water meters; calculates flow rates; and calibrates as needed.
Locates and reads commercial water meters as assigned: descends into vault; pumps water from meter boxes; records meter data and confirms accuracy of readings; downloads and uploads meter data between portable device and computer system for use in billing of accounts; and maintains related documentation.
Connects and/or disconnects services: turns on water meters for new customers ensuring meter is free of leaks and obtaining reading; and turns off and secures meters for closed accounts, broken pipes or non-payment.
Performs general and more complex repair work: changes out boxes, meters, meter washer and connections; exposes buried meters; replaces broken meter lids; replaces curb stops; verifies status of accounts prior to performing repair work; and maintains all related forms and documentation.
Repairs water service lines: locates and digs up water service lines to determine nature of leak; and determines most effective technique for repairing lines.
Maintains inventory of equipment, parts, and supplies used for meter maintenance: initiates requests for new and/or replacement equipment, parts and supplies; and maintains inventory records.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by two years of experience repairing and maintaining water meters.Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
