Job Description
Lead, oversee and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for maintaining, repairing, overhauling mechanical engines and equipment; perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

SSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include, but are not limited to thefunctions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of thejob with or without a reasonable accommodation.
• Lead, plan, train and review the work of staff responsible for maintaining, repairing and overhauling mechanical engines and equipment on automobiles, buses and heavy equipment.
• Plan, direct, and participate in all aspects of mechanical maintenance and repair work including troubleshooting and repairing complex mechanical problems.
• Train assigned employees in their areas of work including proper maintenance work and safety methods, procedures and techniques.
• Supervise the use, care and operation of a variety of mechanical repair equipment including a machine lathe, grinders, voltage meters and welding equipment.
• Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
• Troubleshoot and repair a variety of electrical, engine, transmission and chassis problems on City automobiles, buses and heavy equipment; assign or perform necessary repairs.
• Test and repair components and equipment including alternators, distributors, relays, lights, switches, air conditioning systems and fuel injection systems.
• Perform a variety of welding and fabrication duties; perform vehicle frame and body welding; ensure structural integrity of such equipment.
• Perform safety inspections on assigned automobiles, buses and heavy equipment; identify safety hazards; make necessary repairs and adjustments to assure safe operation.
• Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
• Read and interpret blueprints and schematic wiring diagrams, hydrostatic systems and components.
• Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required; distribute parts as necessary.
• May drive commercial class vehicles in the public right of way during delivery, pickup and road test.
• Deliver and pickup City automobiles, buses and heavy equipment from outside repair vendors.
• Perform emergency road calls on disabled vehicles, diagnose operational problems and perform repairs as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
• Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
High school diploma or GED supplemented by two (2) years technical training in automotive maintenance and mechanical repair; and
Four (4) years experience in minor and major automotive maintenance and mechanical repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment.
Possession of valid ASE Certifications preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a valid City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Possession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B) with a Passenger (P) endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire.
Possession of an AC recovery and CNG fuel within six (6) months from date of hire.Environmental:
Shop environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases and heavy construction equipment.
Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate lifting and carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling and standing for prolonged periods; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
