About the Agency

Located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Biloxi, the MDMR manages all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands, and waterfront areas to provide optimal commercial, recreational, educational, and economic uses of these resources that are consistent with environmental concerns and social changes. Our mission is to enhance, protect, and conserve the state's marine interests.

About the Position

This is a professional position providing assistance to the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (GBNERR). This position will include responsibilities relating to the Education Program at the reserve including assisting with the implementation of the ‘On the Road' education program; assisting with the community education activities; aiding in the execution of teacher workshops including logistics; working with the Education Coordinator and K-12 Education Specialist on integrating with team members from other sectors (Research, Stewardship) to help identify education needs; conducting kayak tours and maintaining the kayaks; providing for the communications needs of the sector including social media and print content, maintaining email lists, etc.; plus a variety of other tasks as needed and assigned by Education Coordinator. Activities will be closely coordinated with the GBNERR, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and other partners, consistent with the goals and objectives of the Reserve, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR), and NOAA. This position will be directly supervised by the Education Coordinator. — This is a Non-State, TIME-LIMITED (14) position.

What you'll need to be Successful

The ideal candidate will have: a science background with a preferred focus on outreach, some experience with either informal or formal education; excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; a working knowledge of coastal ecosystems and Mississippi flora and fauna; ability to operate motor vehicles, boats and other electronic equipment in an efficient, safe and responsible manner; proficiency with basic software packages, including MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and social networking websites; a working knowledge of the Grand Bay NERR 2023-2027 Management Plan and the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. The ideal candidate will be creative, motivated, and skilled in outreach, writing, and graphics. Applicant must possess a valid driver's license and be able to lift at least 25 lbs., and up to 40 lbs., on occasion. A portion of the work will occur outside, often under extreme weather conditions, including extremes of heat, cold, wind, and rain. Additionally, work may occasionally occur on weekends.
