ANNUAL SALARY

$107,302 to $126,261

NOTE :

An Aquatic Director plans, coordinates and supervises personnel engaged in directing recreational aquatic programs and activities within a geographical area or specialized Citywide programs by applying sound supervisory fundamentals and techniques in building and maintaining an effective and equitable workforce, budgetary preparations, written reports and special assignments. An Aquatic Director may direct a regional or Citywide activity that includes the administration of annual programs and budgets, conduct training, and engage with the community and community agencies.
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university; and
Two years of full-time paid professional experience at the level of an Aquatic Facility Manager supervising lifeguards, overseeing and/or planning programs, working with community-based organizations, and ensuring public or patron safety.

PROCESS NOTES

Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.
For qualifying work experience gained outside the City of Los Angeles, the term "professional experience" applies to positions that require possession of a degree from an accredited four-year college or university in order to obtain that position. Therefore, to be considered "professional," non-City qualifying experience must be gained in positions requiring a four-year degree.
A current American Red Cross Standard First Aid Instructor Certificate issued by the American Red Cross; a current Water Safety Instructor Certificate issued by the American Red Cross; a current Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Instructor Certificate issued by the American Cross; and a current Lifeguard Instructor Course Certificate issued by the American Red Cross are required prior to appointment.
As a condition of employment, a valid Class C driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required at the time of appointment. Applicants will be disqualified or deemed ineligible for hire if their DMV record reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation within the last 36 months in any state or jurisdiction. The City of Los Angeles reserves the right to issue a notice of disqualification or ineligibility at any time before a final job offer is extended.
Upon appointment, an Aquatic Director will be required to provide an automobile, properly insured, for use in City service. Mileage will be paid in accordance with established rates.

To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process in the following order: 1) Los Angeles City promotional applicants who meet the minimum requirements. You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to apply for this examination as a promotional candidate; 2) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles on a part-time or exempt basis who meet the minimum requirements; 3) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applications submitted during the filing period may be kept on file in the event that additional applicants need to be tested to meet hiring needs.

Interview: 100%

The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Objectivity; Supervision; Fact Finding; Fiscal Management; Oral Communication; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: safety principles, practices and procedures related to aquatic facilities and programming, including those required by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA), the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Public Health, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission ; methods used to maintain a safe and clean aquatic facility ; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: principles and practices used to plan, direct, and coordinate a variety of public aquatic programs ; Federal, State, and City codes, rules, standards, and regulations related to aquatic facilities and programming, including those outlined by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, City of Los Angeles Municipal Code, and Los Angeles County ; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
